Pope Francis criticized President Trump's mass deportation policies in a letter to American bishops, urging Catholics to embrace human dignity over anti-immigrant narratives and to treat all individuals with compassion.
Pope Francis on Tuesday harshly criticized President Trump's policy of mass deportations and urged Catholics to reject anti-immigrant narratives in an unusually direct attack on the American administration.
In an open letter to American bishops, Francis stated that deporting individuals who often come from challenging situations violates the "dignity of many men and women, and of entire families."
The pope expressed that he had "followed closely the major crisis that is taking place in the United States with the initiation of a program of mass deportations," noting that any policy built on force "begins badly and will end badly."
Francis has long advocated for migrants and has made advocating for their plight a central aspect of his papacy. He described the situation as a "shipwreck of civilization" and has repeatedly spoken against what he views as unwelcoming and unchristian migration policies globally.
This letter represents one of the first public criticisms directed at President Trump since the election, marking a significant escalation in the relationship between the Vatican and the American administration.
Experts noted that by writing an open letter, the pope was indirectly addressing members of the new American administration, many of whom are Catholic, specifically Vice President JD Vance.
Francis responded to Vance's recent discussion of the "ordo amoris," commenting that "Christian love is not a concentric expansion of interests that extends to other persons and groups." He emphasized the need for "love that builds a fraternity open to all, without exception."
The pope's letter was intended to also reach bishops and Catholics who view President Trump positively, attempting to unite the Church and prevent division.
Pope Francis has previously criticized Trump's immigration policies, stating in 2016 that Trump "is not Christian" due to his campaign promises concerning immigration. He has expressed that both presidential candidates in the last election were "against life."
During Trump's first term, the Vatican expressed concern over Trump but was less direct in its criticisms. Recently, however, Pope Francis has been more outspoken against the administration's policies.
In his letter, Francis emphasized that human values should guide actions rather than laws or regulations, urging Catholics to consider the dignity and fundamental rights of individuals.
He reminded the faithful that Jesus and his family were migrants and called on the Church to resist narratives that discriminate against migrants and refugees. Other Christian leaders have also criticized Trump, highlighting the need for mercy towards various marginalized communities.
