Residents in Chatsworth, Los Angeles successfully apprehended a man suspected of arson after he was spotted allegedly starting a fire. Alejandro Martinez, 41, is facing charges, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact them.
A group of residents in Chatsworth, Los Angeles took action on Monday afternoon by pursuing and conducting a citizen's arrest of a man suspected of starting a fire near the Chatsworth Reservoir.
Alejandro Martinez, 41, was arrested and faces a charge of arson, as confirmed by the LA County Sheriff's Department.
Footage recorded by journalist Gabe Cortez shows Martinez running down a road while being chased by residents in cars.
Concerned citizens tackled him after spotting him allegedly igniting a fire in the brush.
Upon arrival, sheriff's deputies conducted a search of Martinez, finding a lighter, a small amount of cash, and a car battery jumper kit in his possession. Video footage captured authorities removing these items from him.
During the arrest, Martinez claimed in Spanish: "No he robado nada, en serio," translating to "I haven't stolen anything, seriously."
Brandon Taylor, a photographer with Traffic News LA, reported that he was taking photos in the area after receiving alerts about a nearby brush fire. Taylor noted the unusual presence of a man in the bushes shortly after the fire was reported.
The community's concerns are heightened due to the recent experiences of many Los Angeles residents still recovering from past wildfires. Taylor remarked that the residents were especially angry due to their history with wildfires, particularly the Woolsey Fire that occurred nearby.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the case to reach out to the LA County Sheriff's Department.
