Nancy McKeon discusses weight scrutiny faced by Facts of Life cast
Nancy McKeon, renowned for her role in "Facts of Life," recently shared her experiences regarding the scrutiny related to the cast's weight. In an interview with the New York Post, McKeon revealed that there was significant talk among the cast members, including Lisa Whelchel, Kim Fields, and Mindy Cohn, about their weight.
While McKeon did not specify the nature of the discussions, she acknowledged that each of them dealt with the pressures in their unique ways. The 58-year-old actress expressed her surprise that the cast's weight became a focal point, especially since the show was well-known for tackling adolescent issues, including eating disorders.
McKeon noted, "When you think about the fact you're recording somebody's puberty from 14 to their early 20s, there's so much development and many things you go through." She remarked on the unfortunate reality within the entertainment industry, stating, "That's why it's called show business, it's a business." She advocated for body representation, emphasizing that there is no singular ideal body type and that all shapes and sizes deserve acknowledgment.
In a related context, her co-star Lisa Whelchel also opened up about her challenges during the show's production. Whelchel shared her experience of being sent to a "fat farm" during filming breaks after gaining weight. However, she expressed gratitude for the progress made towards body positivity today, acknowledging the pressures and the business aspects that influenced their portrayals.
Whelchel reflected on the difficulties of teenage life, including personal struggles, and concluded, "When you know better, you do better," citing Maya Angelou’s wisdom.
