Putin warns Europe after US tariffs on trading partners
Vladimir Putin warned that Europe will quickly bow to U.S. influence after Trump's tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China lead to market chaos and potential disruption among allies.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a warning that Europe will quickly "stand at the feet of the master" following U.S. President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, resulting in turmoil in global markets and concern among European allies.
During a summit of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) leaders in Moscow on October 8, 2024, the Kremlin commented on Trump's weekend decision to enact trade duties on America's closest trading partners. Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated, "You know, there are many tensions there, so, of course, we have no desire to be associated with all this in any way or to evaluate it in any way."
Peskov added, "Let those countries that are participating in this process sort it out," as reported by state news agency RIA Novosti and translated by Reuters.
Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada and a 10% levy on goods from China has sent global markets spiraling, with the tariffs set to take effect on Tuesday. The U.S. President hinted that tariffs on the European Union could follow "pretty soon," although he mentioned the possibility of a deal with the U.K., which has a more balanced trading relationship with the U.S.
European Union officials have indicated that the bloc could respond "in a proportionate way," with the European Commission asserting it would "respond firmly" to any U.S. duties.
Amid significant international sanctions due to its invasion of Ukraine, Russia could benefit from the U.S. tariffs, which may inflict severe economic damage on its trading partners. The tariffs also create discord among former allies, as they aim to undermine Russia's economic and geopolitical influence.
Moscow is hopeful for a more favorable relationship with Washington under Trump's leadership, given their history of cordial relations and mutual admiration.
