Morgan Price Makes History for HBCU Gymnastics with Perfect Score
Morgan Price becomes the first HBCU gymnast to earn a perfect score in women's collegiate gymnastics, achieving a historic milestone for Fisk University and HBCU athletics.
History was made by Morgan Price of Fisk University when the junior gymnast earned a perfect score for her bar routine during a quad meet at Temple University on Saturday. With this impressive feat, Price has etched her name into the record books, becoming the first gymnast representing a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to achieve a perfect score in women's collegiate gymnastics.
The now-historic routine came in the third rotation for the Fisk Women's Gymnastics team. Price showcased her trademark clean skills and executed a stellar full-twisting double-back dismount, drawing roars of excitement from her teammates. When the '10.0' officially flashed on the scoreboard, the entire Bulldog gymnastics team swarmed Price in celebration.
Price's score was a significant step forward, shattering her previous career high of 9.90. In a standout career meet, Price won every event except for beam, achieving a career-high all-around total. She not only won the all-around title but dominated her competition, scoring an impressive 39.500 overall and topping the second-place gymnast by almost an entire point, a staggering margin in women's gymnastics.
This historic meet highlights another significant point in Price's record-breaking career. Since Fisk University established the first HBCU gymnastics program in 2022, Price has been at the forefront of this movement. She became the first HBCU gymnast to earn a score of 9.90 on bars during only the fourth week of her freshman season and subsequently claimed the first HBCU all-around title in Georgia. That same season, she achieved the status of USAG First-Team All-American.
During her second year, Price continued to excel. In week four, she posted the highest score in HBCU history with a remarkable 9.95 on the balance beam. Throughout her sophomore season, she consistently achieved personal bests, culminating in her victory at the USAG National Championships in April 2024, making her the first college gymnastics National Champion from an HBCU program.
Reflecting on her monumental achievements, Price shared her feelings of honor in an interview with ABC News' Good Morning America. "I'm very honored to be on such an amazing team, being part of the first-ever HBCU gymnastics team and being the first HBCU gymnast to win an all-around national title. It really means everything to me," she stated.
Nearly a year later, she has made history once again, this time during Black History Month. For Price, competing for a historically black school has been "an honor." As a top recruit in high school, Price had initially committed to the Arkansas Razorback gymnastics program to compete alongside her sister, Frankie Price. However, when Fisk created its gymnastics program in 2022, Price knew she had to switch commitments and never looked back.
"I chose Fisk because it is the first HBCU with a gymnastics team; growing up in gymnastics, I rarely had teammates who looked like me," Price noted in her Fisk University bio. "I wanted to be a part of history & inspire younger girls who want to attend a HBCU as well. I will forever cherish being a part of this team."
Fans looking to support Price and the HBCU gymnastics program can watch them compete next week on Sunday, February 16, at the Brown Girls Do Gymnastics Invite. The Bulldogs will face Wilberforce, the other active HBCU gymnastics program, and Greenville University in a historic tri-meet at Wilberforce's home turf.
