Laverne Cox criticized President Trump's executive orders regarding transgender rights, calling them illegal during her appearance on "The View," and expressed hope for legal challenges against them.
Transgender actor Laverne Cox criticized President Donald Trump's recent executive orders, labeling them as "illegal" during an appearance on ABC's "The View." Cox joined actor and comedian George Wallace to discuss their new TV series, "Clean Slate," which centers on a father reconnecting with his child who has recently transitioned.
Cox took the opportunity to denounce the administration's executive orders aimed at limiting transgender language in federal government policies. “I think in terms of the administration and all this propaganda and lies - everything he's doing is illegal, by the way,” Cox stated on the show.
The political discourse was initiated by co-host Ana Navarro, who praised Cox for successfully merging activism with acting, and asked for Cox's take on Trump's recent actions. In the previous month, Trump signed an executive order titled, "Defending women from gender ideology extremism and restoring biological truth to the federal government," which asserts U.S. policy recognizes only two biological sexes.
The order delineates that public institutions must determine eligibility for women's sports based on biological sex rather than gender identity or testosterone levels. Cox illuminated the ongoing anti-trans discrimination she has witnessed over recent years, pointing out how it began at the state level where 26 states had already banned "gender-affirming care" for minors. She expressed devastation that trans families were forced to relocate due to these policies.
While discussing her feelings of love for trans people, Cox further condemned Trump's executive orders as "horrible." She expressed hope that these orders would face legal challenges due to their alleged illegality, arguing that the focus on trans individuals distracts from larger systemic issues affecting the economy. “Trans people are not the reason you can't afford eggs, healthcare, or housing,” Cox emphasized, indicating that the true culprits are being overlooked.
