LA Clippers Aim for Success Before Trade Deadline
The LA Clippers, currently with a record of 26-19, are gearing up for the trade deadline to effectively build around stars Kawhi Leonard and James Harden and aim for playoff success.
The LA Clippers have only advanced past the first round of the playoffs twice in the last decade, despite the arrival of top talent. After 48 games in the 2024-25 season, they hold a record of 26-19, showing promising potential to finally break through in the postseason.
As the February trade deadline approaches, the Clippers must strategically develop their roster around stars Kawhi Leonard and James Harden.
Kawhi Leonard has participated in just seven games this year due to injury, but the team's record improves to 6-1 when he plays. With the second-best defensive rating in the NBA, the Clippers have a high ceiling for success.
Jake Fischer from The Stein Line reported on the Clippers' trade deadline strategy, noting the front office's desire to maintain financial flexibility. According to Fischer, “The Clippers, according to league sources, are still keen on keeping their books clean, indicating to rival front offices that they are reluctant to bring back any long-term salary in any potential trade activity over the remaining 12 days of NBA Trade Season.” He added that the Clippers are positioning themselves to benefit from owner Steve Ballmer's readiness to invest and the attraction of their new Intuit Dome home once Leonard's career with the team concludes.
Owner Steve Ballmer has dedicated significant resources to differentiate this franchise from their city rivals. However, building a team centered around Leonard has not yielded the desired results during his six-year stint, and the clock may be ticking for the often-injured 33-year-old. This year's trade deadline could prove pivotal for the Clippers.
