Trump questions wind farms impact on wildlife amidst scientific research
US President Donald Trump has expressed concerns that wind farms negatively affect birds and whales. His statements have ignited a discussion among scientists who are evaluating the effects of renewable wind energy in comparison to the impacts of oil and gas exploration on wildlife.
Aspen Ellis, a seabird biologist from the University of California, Santa Cruz, has spent a decade conducting field research on isolated islands off the US coastline. During her extensive time in close proximity to thousands of birds, she gained insights into their behaviours and learned to identify nearby predators by observing the changes in their calls.
However, as she compiled her findings alongside several decades of existing research on these bird colonies, Ellis began to observe a troubling trend regarding the potential threats posed by wind farms.
