The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in a closely contested game, keeping their playoff hopes alive as they prepare for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.
The Philadelphia Flyers (24-26-7) and Pittsburgh Penguins (23-25-9) find themselves in a curious position, neck-and-neck for last place in the Metropolitan Division while also being just a winning streak away from the wildcard conversation. In a recent match, the Flyers clinched a regulation win at home, edging out the Penguins 3-2.
The Flyers opened the scoring just 1:44 into the game with a goal from Scott Laughton, marking his 11th of the season. The primary assist was credited to Travis Konecny, who has now recorded points in two consecutive games after previously going four games without scoring. The play was initiated by newcomer Andrei Kuzmenko, who made a smart pass from the wall to Laughton, earning him a secondary assist.
Although the Penguins dominated the shot count early on, they struggled to find the net. Erik Karlsson managed to equalise for Pittsburgh in the second period, beating goaltender Samuel Ersson with a crafty low shot. With star players Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin sidelined due to injuries, Karlsson stepped up, with assists from Matt Grzelcyk and Rickard Rakell.
Pittsburgh’s joy was short-lived, as just eight minutes later, Garnet Hathaway capitalised on a challenge from netminder Joel Blomqvist during a breakaway, inadvertently sending the puck into his own net, putting Philadelphia ahead 2-1 despite being outshot 18-7.
The Flyers extended their lead with a long-range shot from Konecny, assisted by defence players Cam York and Travis Sanheim. The Penguins fought back and managed to score in a reviewable situation when Kevin Hayes found the back of the net. The goal, assisted by new acquisition Danton Heinen and Anthony Beauvillier, was validated after a coach's challenge.
Despite a strong push from Pittsburgh, they were unable to equalise. Ersson ended the game with 32 saves on 34 shots, while Blomqvist made 17 saves from 20 shots.
With the 4 Nations Face-Off upcoming, both teams will have a break before their next games. The Flyers will return to the Wells Fargo Center on February 22 to face the Edmonton Oilers, while the Penguins host the Washington Capitals at PPG Paints Arena on the same date.
