Mary Fowler Leads Manchester City to League Cup Final Ahead of SheBelieves Cup
Mary Fowler is in top form as she leads Manchester City to the League Cup final and prepares to participate in the SheBelieves Cup after a successful return to the national squad.
Mary Fowler, a key player for the Matildas, is set to showcase her impressive form at the SheBelieves Cup later this February, following her outstanding performance with Manchester City, where she scored two crucial goals and helped her team secure a spot in the League Cup final.
After taking a mental health break during the international window at the end of 2024, Fowler was recalled to the national squad for the upcoming four-match tournament in the USA, a decision that has proven beneficial.
Just last weekend, Fowler netted two goals in a league match against Arsenal, although she faced a setback by missing a penalty during the semi-final clash with the same team, despite opening the scoring in the 26th minute. However, she redeemed herself with a last-minute goal, leading City to a 2-1 victory that earned them a place in the final against Chelsea.
Fowler has already scored six goals in the Women’s Super League (WSL) this season, surpassing her tally from last season, where she scored four goals in 21 appearances.
“[It was] something to be really proud of,” she commented regarding City's win. “Arsenal always put up a good fight and they played well tonight. I’m super proud of the girls and how we played, just happy to get the win.”
Feeling a mix of relief and joy, Fowler expressed her eagerness to win with her teammates, saying, “I was really happy. I felt mostly relief, but I was super happy. I’ve been wanting to win something with the girls for so long, so to be a step closer to doing that is really exciting.”
The upcoming final against Chelsea in March will mark Fowler’s first final with Manchester City and serves as a rematch of the 2022 League Cup final, which City won 3-1.
“Yeah, I'm really excited for that. I haven't played in a final yet with the girls, so it'll be a new feeling for me here,” she said. “But I think we're ready for it, and I'm just super pumped for it.”
