Fans Celebrate Record Ace at Phoenix Open
It's already known as the rowdiest hole in golf but things went into overdrive when fans at the Phoenix Open witnessed a slam dunk ace at the iconic par-3 16th on Saturday (AEDT).
Argentine Emiliano Grillo set off the latest beer shower at TPC Scottsdale's stadium hole, flying his 155-yard tee shot directly into the cup to send fans into raptures during the second round.
"It was perfect. Perfect number, just a full shot, pitching wedge," Grillo told the Golf Channel after his shot. "It was a little bit of a delayed reaction because we don't see it really well from (155 yards). Just the crowd went nuts, so did I."
"Obviously you dream of this. I've been playing here 10 years ... and every time you're standing there, you get a thought of like, 'What if this one goes in?' It was just perfect."
It was the 12th ace in tournament history on a hole that has witnessed some iconic moments, none moreso than Tiger Woods' unforgettable hole-in-one in 1997.
The ace helped Grillo as he fights to make the cut at the $US9 million event, being led by Belgian Thomas Detry who carded a sizzling seven-under 64 in the second round.
Australian Min Woo Lee also charged up the leaderboard with a five-under 66 to move to six under for the tournament, putting himself in the mix heading into the weekend.
