Carter's Basin redevelopment moves forward with detailed proposal phase
The Carter's Basin redevelopment is moving ahead with the start of the detailed proposal stage, aiming to enhance local fishing and tourism industries.
The Carter's Basin redevelopment is progressing under the Crisafulli Government, with a shortlist of bidders now moving into the detailed proposal stage.
Bidders are given until mid-May to submit their detailed proposals, which will be assessed by the Queensland Government in collaboration with the City of Gold Coast and the Gold Coast Waterways Authority.
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie has requested the Gold Coast Waterways Authority to join forces with the Queensland Government to explore solutions for the fishing fleet, as the old tuna wharf on The Spit has been closed.
Mr Bleijie commented that the previous Labor Government had allowed the development to stagnate, creating uncertainty for local fishermen and tourism operators. He stated, "Nearly a year and a half ago the Palaszczuk-Miles Labor Government started a process that unfortunately has led to nothing."
"The Crisafulli Government is advancing the redevelopment of Carter's Basin by progressing into the detailed proposal phase. Redeveloping Carter's Basin offers a significant chance to establish a unique seafood and marine mixed-use precinct that will generate tourism and economic benefits for the community."
Minister for Education and the Arts and Member for Surfers Paradise, John-Paul Langbroek, expressed his support for the move into the detailed proposal stage, highlighting the positive prospective outcomes for affected businesses.
"We aim for Carter's Basin to become the long-term home for the local fishing fleet, allowing for fresh seafood sales directly off the boat, a tradition enjoyed by locals and visitors for years," Mr Langbroek added.
City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate emphasised the significance of The Spit for the Gold Coast and the need for careful development. "The Spit is the gateway to the Gold Coast that supports the maritime and tourism sectors, so we must get this right," Mayor Tate said.
"Dependent on the market process outcomes, the City will collaborate with the Queensland Government to develop a long-term lease for the marina." He concluded that the City of Gold Coast anticipates working with the Queensland Government and Gold Coast Waterways Authority to realise an exceptional precinct at Carter's Basin.
