Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, spoke out regarding President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, a move she appears to support. However, she disclosed that she has not communicated with either Biden or former First Lady Jill Biden for several months.
Biden's withdrawal became historic last July, following significant pressure from Democratic lawmakers urging him to step down after a poor debate performance against now-President Donald Trump. Pelosi was perceived as a significant influence in this pressure campaign. Since Biden's exit, interactions between the Bidens and Pelosi have reportedly been strained.
During an interview with MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell, Pelosi addressed Biden's belief that he could have triumphed over Trump if he hadn't faced pressures to withdraw. Pelosi responded, "Well, all I know is that we won a seat in the house. We did not lose any seats... I think it would have been quite different with President Biden at the top of the ticket."
Mitchell highlighted Jill Biden's expressed disappointment concerning Pelosi’s role, mentioning that Jill had reflected, "We were friends for 50 years. It was disappointing."
When asked if there was a possibility to reconcile, Pelosi expressed hope but admitted, "No, I haven't [spoken to Jill Biden]." She emphasized a collective focus on serving the American people, particularly working families.
Doubling down on Biden's failed campaign, Pelosi remarked it wasn't on "path to victory," while denying that she was the reason behind Biden's exit.
Pelosi metaphorically suggested that politics can resemble maintaining a marriage for the benefit of children, saying, "My whole passion about being in politics is for the children... I think that it would have been important for the children to not have Donald Trump be president."
Looking ahead, Pelosi is optimistic about the Democratic Party's prospects for the upcoming midterm elections in 2026, stating, "In about 6 or 7 months, you're going to see such a change. By the time we start our campaigns in this fall for next fall, you're going to see a very different picture about the Democrats vis-a-vis Donald Trump."
