China's expanding influence in the Caribbean poses national security risks for the U.S., with significant investments made in the region and a rise in Chinese migrants at U.S. borders.
China's increasing presence in the Caribbean, often referred to as "America's third border," poses potential risks to U.S. national security. A report cited by Gordon G. Chang highlights China's significant investments in the region, totaling over $10 billion from 2005 to 2022. Notably, the Freeport Container port project in the Bahamas is just 87 miles from Florida's coast, showcasing China's maritime logistics efforts.
During his presidency, Donald Trump emphasized the need to regain control over the Panama Canal, which has been subject to Chinese investments. "China is operating the Panama Canal," Trump stated, highlighting concerns over Chinese influence in this vital waterway.
Chang noted that U.S. oversight of the Western Hemisphere has diminished, but recent government initiatives, such as Secretary of State Rubio's trip to Panama, could signal a shift in U.S. foreign policy focus towards the Americas.
The rise of Chinese migrants at the U.S. borders correlates with China's growing influence. Recent statistics indicate significant encounters of Chinese nationals at the northern and southern borders, raising questions about the motivations behind these increases.
Chang expressed concern regarding the demographic of these migrants, noting that a substantial portion are single men of military age. The presence of groups with identical kits is particularly alarming, highlighting potential organized movement.
