CBS Announces New Series Boston Blue Starring Donnie Wahlberg
CBS has announced the new series Boston Blue, starring Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Danny Reagan. The show will explore police family dynamics in Boston and expand the Blue Bloods universe.
Great news for Blue Bloods fans! Donnie Wahlberg's character, Detective Danny Reagan, will return on CBS in a new series titled Boston Blue, set to premiere during the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
The series, which is an expansion of the Blue Bloods universe, will see Danny Reagan taking up a role with the Boston Police Department. He is set to be partnered with Detective Lena Peters, who is the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family in Boston.
This new project comes from writers Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, known for their work on S.W.A.T., and is produced by CBS Studios in collaboration with Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Both Sonnier and Margolis will serve as showrunners and executive producers, alongside Wahlberg.
Originally, CBS had considered various spinoffs from Blue Bloods, including plots that would have relocated Danny to Texas and included Tom Selleck. However, Boston Blue was not initially conceived as a direct offshoot of Blue Bloods.
The new series idea stemmed from Sonnier and Margolis pitching a drama focused on a family of officers in Boston, which then led to CBS requesting a script. The incorporation of Danny Reagan into this concept became possible due to Wahlberg's strong connections to Boston.
CBS's decision to greenlight Boston Blue comes as part of the network's strategy to expand the Blue Bloods franchise, which ended its 14-season run in December but retains a dedicated fanbase. The franchise's popularity reflects the network's interest in its potential extensions, which were discussed at a shareholder meeting last June.
After a successful run with previous collaborations, Sonnier and Margolis continue to build their credentials in TV writing and production, contributing to this new addition to the police procedural genre.
