Pensioners Left Struggling After Winter Fuel Payment Cut
Sandra mentioned that she previously relied on her winter fuel payment, but when it became means-tested, her pension pushed her £20 a week over the threshold, resulting in her losing the benefit.
“I’ve had to take out a credit card, overdraft and a credit account to be able to pay for things this winter,” she told the BBC.
Sandra is among the 11 million pensioners who no longer receive the payments, which can be worth up to £300, just as the temperatures began to drop.
While the government stated its commitment to supporting pensioners, the charity Age UK reported a 60% increase in calls to its advice line during the cold snap.
