Jockey Altercation at Turffontein Sparks Inquiry and Apology
An altercation between jockeys Gavin Lerena and Jason Gates at Turffontein has led to public outrage and an inquiry by the NHA. Lerena has apologised, insisting his actions were uncharacteristic.
An on-track altercation between jockeys Gavin Lerena and Jason Gates during Race 2 at Turffontein on Sunday has sparked widespread condemnation. Lerena, aboard Gimme A Storm, struck Gates, riding Blurred Vision, multiple times on the back with his crop mid-race, prompting a mild retaliatory response from Gates. The incident unfolded as their horses raced closely, with the altercation captured on video, further fuelling public outrage.
The National Horseracing Authority (NHA) has confirmed an inquiry into the matter, noting that the usual Admission of Guilt (AOG) option will not be available in this case.
In a formal statement, Lerena apologised to all parties involved, acknowledging the incident was "entirely inconsistent" with his character. He stated, "I extend my sincerest apologies to the owners and trainer of the horse, my sponsors, the racing fans, and the relevant race day authorities affected." Lerena attributed his actions to provocation but emphasised his respect for the sport, adding, "This sport of racing has a special place in my heart, and I remain dedicated to contributing positively to its reputation."
