Alex Cullen departs Today show amid controversy
Alex Cullen has left the Today show following a controversy over a $50,000 reward offer linked to a personal nickname, leading to disappointment among viewers and discussions of ethical practices.
Alex Cullen, a nationwide favourite, shocked fans on Friday when fellow Today host Karl Stefanovic confirmed that Cullen and Nine had mutually agreed to part ways.
This news followed Portelli's Instagram post earlier in the month, where he offered a $50,000 reward to any journalist who referred to him by his preferred new name, "McLaren man," rather than "Lambo guy."
On Sunday, Cullen posted on social media after being sacked from the Today show, where he had worked as a presenter for five years. "This has been a very difficult time and I just want to say thank you to all the wonderful people who reached out," Cullen wrote alongside a photo of him and his son. "It means the world to me and my young family. I will miss my colleagues at Today and wish them the best. Thank you again and I look forward to whatever comes next."
Cullen previously called Portelli by the nickname "McLaren man" during a live cross from Melbourne Park, later sharing the footage on Instagram. Portelli acknowledged Cullen's reference, responding, "we have a winner, well played sir," along with a screenshot that appeared to show a bank transfer receipt of $50,000 to the journalist.
A Nine spokesperson confirmed Cullen's departure to multiple outlets, stating, "Nine has agreed with Today presenter and journalist Alex Cullen that he will finish with the network following a review into a recent incident." The spokesperson added, "Appropriate action has been promptly taken, including arranging for the funds to be returned. While we review the circumstances in which this occurred, Alex has agreed to stand down."
Portelli also took to Instagram to express his support for Cullen, revealing that the $50,000 gift had been equally donated to The Salvation Army and The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). "Alex Cullen... on behalf of you, mate, $25,000 to the Salvation Army and $25,000 to the RSPCA," Portelli stated. "I've kept pretty quiet about what unfolded with Alex, but even before he'd heard from Ch9, we had a conversation where he expressed his desire to donate the money. That speaks volumes about his character."
Portelli expressed admiration for Cullen, stating, "Alex, you're an absolute gentleman. If Ch9 let you go (though I really hope they don't!), I'd be more than happy to collaborate with you on something. True class, mate!"
The news of Cullen's departure has disappointed many loyal viewers of Today, with numerous fans vowing to boycott Channel 9 until their favourite presenter returns.
